Three champions who should be the first in line for an ASU
In their most recent Champions Roadmap, Riot announced that starting in 2022, they will be rolling out a series of ASUs to update some former Champions on the game’s new look and feel. Updated Art & Sustainability which unlike VGUs are just cosmetic changes but are essential to bringing a new look to the game.
According to Riot, they’ll start with the original champions and work their way up. It’s unclear how many Champions they will need to update, but with over 140 Champions on the roster, it will be a long process to update everyone.
Here are the three champions Riot should focus on first for an ASU:
Annie is fortunate to have been one of the recipients of an VGU. The updates she received during the upgrade were a huge step up from where she started out, but honestly, her character is still pretty bland. There is so much that the rippling fire and a swinging skirt can fix. Annie’s remodel is very well deserved “not only is she ‘My First Mage” of almost every player, but she always finds her way back into the fold as a viable choice.
Blitzcrank is probably one of the blandest media choices outside of Alistar. But, it is certainly satisfying to land that hook. This champion has received some really cool skins in the past and an ASU could make him one of the best skins in the game, especially if his new character model leans more on the mecha-monster side.
From an animation standpoint, he certainly deserves more than what he’s working with right now. His ultimate still looks incredibly dated and while it’s pretty comedic, there is a lot more that they could do with his W than just flapping arms as he runs.
Tryndamere is there because well… it’s Tryndamere. He’s one of the champions who has needed a tune-up for an incredibly long time. There are a lot of things that can be changed about this champion. First, it would be nice to have more than two slash attacks for his auto attacks. But at least it would be great if they changed it for when he builds up rage so he doesn’t look like he has a hernia every time he swings.
Second, something absolutely has to happen with its trailing slash to make it more realistic. It’s just kind of funny to see it start spinning extremely fast all the time. But what could really use a new look is her ultimate. while you need to let both players know that Tryndamere using his ultimate flaming ring around his waist doesn’t quite do the move justice.
The common theme to all of these characters is that their movements are seriously dated visually. They absolutely still have a place in the game especially since they find themselves in meta or pro-play, but these ASUs were made for champions like these.
