Gaffney named American college star for fourth time


BETHLEHEM, PA – Recent Lehigh Men’s Lacrosse Graduate Conor Gaffney is a CoSIDA varsity star for the fourth time, announced Friday, as Gaffney was named to the men’s second team At-Large for a second consecutive season. Gaffney was named to the All-American Academic Third Team after his second and junior years, then second team as a senior student and now a graduate.

Gaffney is the only four-time winner on this year’s Academic All-Americans At-Large team. Freshmen are not eligible for the award, so Gaffney has been named Academic All-District and All-America in every year he’s been eligible.

In class, Gaffney posted a cumulative grade point average of 4.0 in graduate studies after completing his undergraduate career with a grade of 3.95 as a double major in Mechanical Engineering and Integrated Business and Engineering (Finance). Recently named the USILA Scholar All-American, Gaffney is a two-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and three-time Academic All-Patriot League (including 2020). Twice nominated for the prestigious Senior CLASS award, he has also won the team’s varsity athlete of the year award several times. Gaffney was a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, the Pi Tau Sigma Mechanical Engineering Honor Society, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He won the Elisha P. Wilbur Mathematics Award for best performance in first year engineering mathematics courses. Gaffney returned to Lehigh for a fifth year through the President’s Scholarship Program, which recognizes outstanding academic performance of undergraduates by offering a fifth year of study tuition-free.

On the pitch, Gaffney was drafted in the Premiere Lacrosse League collegiate draft (the Mountain Hawks’ first-ever selection) and was part of the Archers roster, making his PLL debut on July 11 against the Cannons. Gaffney was named the 2019 Patriot League Confrontation Specialist of the Year and an Honorable Mention in the U.S. Playoffs by USILA and Inside Lacrosse. He was an Honorable Mention of Preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse heading into the 2021 season. Gaffney ended his career winning 63.5% of his faceoffs (686-1081) with 401 balls on the ground, holding the record. of the program for game wins and ground balls (GB total is also a mark of the Patriot League). Gaffney supported junior Mike Sisselbrger in 2021, who broke the NCAA Division I record for face to face percentage (79.5).

Lehigh’s men’s lacrosse presented a CoSIDA Academic All-American five times, four by Gaffney and one by Jonathan Stumpf in 2011.
