Fukuoka gets the biggest Gundam statue in Japan

After the opening last year of the Yokohama Gundam Factory featuring a giant mecha in motion, and the recently installed Gundam manhole covers in Odawara, Gundam fans now have a new attraction to look forward to. Scheduled for completion in spring 2022, a brand new Gundam robot will be installed at the new Mitsui Lalaport Commercial Park in Fukuoka.

The huge shopping and entertainment complex is slated to open in the Hakata district of Fukuoka. It will house many shops, restaurants and an outdoor plaza with a life-size Gundam robot statue. The installation will be a 1: 1 scale replica of the RX-93 v Gundam, or Nu Gundam, known as the mecha hero from the franchise’s first film, “Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack”, in 1988.

The impressive anime robot will also be the tallest Gundam statue to date, measuring 20 meters tall, overtaking Tokyo’s Unicorn Gundam (19.7 m; pictured), Yokohama’s RX-78-2 Gundam ( 18 m), as well as the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam in Shanghai (18.03 m).

Not only that, it is the first statue of Gundam in western Japan. The large brooch standing behind the mecha is a Fin Funnel – a special beam weapon unique to Nu Gundams (yes, we did some research on Gundams).

Along with the new statue, Mitsui Shopping Park Lalaport Fukuoka, which is also slated to open in spring 2022, will house a specialty shop and Gundam Park mini-museum.
