Code Geass

Code Geass takes place in an imaginary Orwellian world where power is divided between the three superpowers: the British Holy Empire, the European Union (also called Europa United) and the Chinese Federation.

The story revolves around Lelouch vi Britannia (voiced by Jun Fukuyama in the Japanese version, Johnny Yong Bosch in English) of the British Empire, an outcast prince also known as Lelouch Lamperouge. While attending Ashford Academy, he meets a mysterious girl named CC (Yukana/Kate Higgins) who grants him the power to order anyone to do whatever he wants, known as the Power of the Kings, or Geass. Lelouch uses this power to strategize war and track down his mother’s killers, which was so tragic that his sister goes blind and loses the ability to walk.

Robots known as “Knightmare Frames” are used in battle, and Japan is attacked by these mechs, unleashing an unwarranted invasion. These mechs wipe out the area, forcefully annexing it and naming it Japan Area 11. Lelouch intends to take revenge on the empire for his misdeeds.

Furthermore, he promises his childhood friend Suzaku Kururugi to free Japan from tyrannical machinations, but they end up clashing in many battles.

Initially, he fights specific mecha battles for personal reasons to save himself, but eventually he forms a radical rebel group “Black Knights” to free his empire.

Code Geass

Land details for Code Geass: Z of Recapture are still being kept under wraps, aside from the fact that they take place after the events of the last film in the franchise’s trilogy. Fans wonder what direction the new series will take as the original series and movies take place in alternate timelines.

Although the films are considered recaps of the series, there are various key plot changes that create inconsistencies in the universe of Code Geass. That’s why it’s still unclear if the new series will be a direct sequel to the show’s second season or be based on the timeline of the movie trilogy.

Monsters & Critics has provided an explanation for this confusion

“The creators apparently saw the [Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;Surrection] film as an alternate timeline since Taniguchi said the compilation trilogy is “not a negation of the TV series, but rather a possible outcome”. This means the original ending remains intact as the new films establish a separate new canon based on an alternate timeline.”

While the story of the new Code Geass The series is still under wraps, it’s likely that we’ll be able to see stories from different characters, as it’s still unclear if Lelouch will be directly involved in the new series.

Code Geass

At the end of Code Geass Season 2, Lelouch enacted the plan known as Zero Requiem, in which Suzaku (apparently) publicly executed Lelouch, freeing the world from his tyrannical rule and ultimately creating peace. However, there is several fan theories that claim Lelouch is actually alive.

At the end of the second season, Nunnally vi Brittania becomes Empress of the Holy Empire of Brittania, and many key characters are still alive.

Code Geass: Z of Recapture could somehow bring Lelouch back to life, but with plot details still unclear, we still don’t know if the beloved antihero will return in the new season.
