Isekai anime have been almost staple for the past decade. Sword art online, Suzerain, Re: ZERO -Start life in another world-, and KonoSuba are just a few of the shows that have cemented the subgenre as a staple in the industry. The basic premise of someone being taken to a fantasy world to start over is intriguing and leaves plenty of room for the creators to play around with unique settings, quirky characters, and tones.

Punie-Chan magic witch

Punie-Chan magic witch

  • Japanese title: Dai Mahou Tougé

An OVA series released in 2006 and 2007, Punie-Chan magic witch is a parody, as the name suggests, of the magic girl genre. Online to rule Magical Land, Punie leaves to spend a year in Japan, enrolling in high school in the process.

Punished may appear to be an angel at first glance, but the witch has a temper and she doesn’t hesitate to turn gleefully violent if necessary. Punie-Chan magic witch is a short and funny anime, although it generally reuses the same punchline.

Isekai Izakaya: Japanese cuisine from another world

Isekai Izakaya Japanese cuisine from another world

  • Japanese title: Isekai Izakaya: Koto Aitheria no Izakaya Nobu

Although overshadowed by another anime with a similar premise that came out a year before, Isekai Izakaya: Japanese cuisine from another world is nevertheless an intriguing interpretation of the inverted isekai formula. The anime revolves around a restaurant that welcomes guests from other worlds, and the focus is mostly on the food.

No action or tension, Isekai Izakaya is a delicious and relaxing fantasy show with friendly characters, wonderful meals and a chipper attitude. The episodes are also short, so it’s a pretty quick watch.

Kuromukuro

Mecha Kuromukuro

Released via Netflix, Kuromukuro has robots, aliens and very good animation. Following the discovery of a giant sleeping robot, humanity built a research center which eventually built some mecha. Abandonment of Gabriel

Gabriel Stall Gabriel Angel

Abandonment of Gabriel is not traditionally considered an isekai, but he has all the attributes of one. Two angels and two demons are sent to Earth from Heaven and Hell with respect, and they don’t act quite as their backgrounds indicate. An angel with a lot of potential, Gabriel falls in love with Earth’s offerings, especially video games, and turns his back on Heaven.

Abandonment of Gabriel is a “cute girls doing cute things” anime with a reverse isekai twist. Its characters are funny, especially the demon Satanichia, and the anime doesn’t abuse the “fish out of the water” humor.

Sugar Rune of Sugar

Sugar Sugar Rune anime, Chocolate

While widely regarded as their own thing, many magical girl animes are essentially reverse isekai. Ultra manic and Magical Girl Lyric Nanoha both have reverse isekai elements, but the best of the bunch is Sugar Rune of Sugar. A classic 2000s show, this anime follows two witches who vie for the throne of the wizarding world. In order to choose a winner, they travel to Earth and enter into a contest to see who can collect the most human hearts.

Rather than action, this shoujo series primarily focuses on the friendship between the two protagonists, Chocolate and Vanilla, and some romance. Clever, hilarious and endowed with a great artistic style, Sugar Rune of Sugar is a blast.

The devil is a part time

  • Japanese title: Hataraku Maou-sama!

Probably the first show that comes to mind when people think of reverse isekai, The devil is a part-time! drops off a powerful demon lord in Tokyo, removes most of his power from him, then sends him to work at a fast food restaurant. The premise is great, and the anime makes full use of its characters’ unfamiliarity with human conventions.

Sadao Maou is awesome as a demon lord, while Emi Yusa is a fun sheet for the lead role as a hero. However, the anime’s show thief is Shirou Ashiya, a demon trained with Sadao who is left to take care of the house while Sadao flips burgers.

Re: Creators

Re wicked creators

In this universe, every fictional story exists in its own world, and problems arise when some of these characters end up on the real Earth. Re: Creators Just might have the strongest premise of any reverse isekai series, one that opens up a whole world of possibilities when it comes to character types, abilities, and themes.

While the two protagonists, Souta Mizushino and Selesia Upitiria, are somewhat bland, the rest of the characters are quite strong, especially the main antagonist Altair and Meteora Österreich. Re: Creators‘the animation is also breathtaking.

2
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is a warm and fuzzy anime, the kind that inspires constant smiles and more than a few giggles. Although primarily a comedy, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon MaidThe content of is undermined with genuine emotion and surprisingly deep themes, especially in Season 2.

Hinamatsuri

Hinamatsuri - Hina and Yoshifumi Nitta

One random day, Nitta, a yakuza member, finds a strange pod with a girl’s face in her living room. This item contains Hina, a powerful telepath who has escaped her world to escape those who see her as little more than a tool.

Hinamatsuri is brilliant. Hina’s deadpan demeanor juxtaposes Nitta’s overreacting perfectly, and it’s a pleasure to see their parent-daughter dynamic blossom as the series progresses. The supporting characters are also excellent and go on largely unpredictable journeys.
